What Canadian private practice therapists should know about SEO

If you’ve got a therapy website, you’ve probably heard people throw around the term “SEO.” But what does SEO actually mean for Canadian private practice therapists, and why does it matter for your website? Let’s break it down in plain language.
First off, what is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization. Basically, it’s the work that goes into helping your website show up when someone searches for “therapist near me” or “online therapy in Ontario.”
Search engines (like Google) look at certain signals on your site—like page titles, headings, and keywords—to decide if your website is a good match for what people are searching for. The better your SEO, the more likely your practice shows up in front of potential clients.
Why is SEO important for therapists in Canada?
Canadian therapists face unique challenges with regulations from your college that mean you can’t advertise in the same way other businesses can. On top of that, therapy is a saturated market and there are a lot of therapists online, especially offering virtual sessions across provinces.
That’s where SEO comes in. Good SEO helps you:
Show up in Google searches when potential clients are looking for a therapist in your province or city.
Reach clients who are ready to book: people typing in “trauma therapist Toronto” or “couples counselling BC” are usually looking to start therapy soon.
Save admin time by connecting with clients who already know you’re a good fit because they found you while searching for your specialties.

How does SEO work for therapy websites?
Therapy website SEO basics:
Title tags and meta descriptions: These are the little blurbs that show up in Google search results. Make sure they actually describe your services and location.
Headings (H1, H2, etc.): Use headings to organize your pages clearly. Example: “Child Therapy in Toronto” as an H1, then “How I Work with Children” as an H2.
Alt text for images: Add short descriptions to your images including keywords, so search engines and screen readers
know what's in them. Example: “Grey couch in a trauma therapist
office in Toronto.”
Service pages: Instead of one generic “services” page, create separate pages for each specialty (like anxiety therapy, trauma therapy, couples counselling). This gives Google more chances to rank you.
Local SEO: Add your city, province, and service area throughout your site. If you offer online therapy in Ontario, say exactly that—because that’s what clients type into Google. Add a map in your footer as well and link it to your address (that way it appears on every page)!
Google Business Profile: Even if you’re mostly virtual, you can list your practice on Google so clients can find you in local searches.
What do therapists usually wonder about SEO?
“Do I need SEO if I get clients through referrals?”
Yes, because not everyone will come through word of mouth. SEO makes sure new clients who don’t know you yet can still find you.
“How long does SEO take to work?”
SEO isn’t instant. It usually takes a few months of consistent effort before you start seeing your website climb in rankings.
“Can I do SEO myself or should I hire someone?”
You can do the basics yourself, like editing headings, writing blog posts, and adding alt text. But if you want deeper knowledge and research, or ongoing support, working with someone who understands therapist websites (it's me, hi!) is worth it.
Quick SEO tips for Canadian therapists
Use plain language your clients would actually use in their search, not just clinical terms. Example: “therapy for anxiety” instead of “generalized anxiety disorder treatment.”
Keep your website updated. Fresh content tells Google your site is active (blog posts, new services, new therapists, new resources).
BONUS: Post regular updates on your Google Business Profile!
Write blog posts answering client questions (like this one). These build trust and help SEO.
Always check your mobile site—most clients will find you from their phones.
Last step: Get started with your SEO!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to do everything at once. Start small: update your titles, headings, and service pages. Then build from there.
OR if you’d rather focus on your clients while someone else handles the SEO? That’s exactly what I do! I help Canadian therapists get found online with websites that are easy to manage and built with SEO from the start.
